A Smelly Washing Machine - What can you do?

Does your Machine smell unclean or musty? Chances are, that’s what it is. It can be the machine itself, the rubber door surround seal or a combination of the two.

Unfortunately, the modern trend for using eco-friendly low temperature wash cycles has meant the germs that get washed out of your clothing don’t get killed in the wash. In fact, your machine provides the perfect breeding ground for germs and bacteria, so how can you fight back and get rid of those smells?

But first a word of warning before you tackle any such job. When inspecting your machine we strongly recommend the wearing of disposable or rubber gloves as the areas you will be cleaning can be a health hazard particularly if you suffer from Asthma, Dermatitis or Eczema. Remember to also use safety glasses when spraying liquids.

Firstly, inspect the Door Seal, that also includes the inner channel that runs around the inside where debris usually hides. If it’s all clean then you can proceed to the machine cleaning section. If not then let’s look at cleaning the seal. You will need a couple of products to help, namely ‘Astonish’ or similar Mould & Mildew cleaner spray and a plentiful supply of Baby Wipes.

First of all spray the seal and clean it as much as you can to remove any light deposits – this to be done to the whole seal. Then fold the  Baby Wipes in to strips and position on the seal similar to the picture, make sure the wipes are soaked with the cleaner then leave overnight. Please Note: Do not use abrasive scrapers or harmful chemicals on the door surround – it  is made of rubber so can be punctured, split and dissolved easily.

Once your rubber is clean do a regular hot wash and leave your washing machine door open between washes to dry the tub and rubber (be aware of the danger to children and pets while doing so).

To Freshen up your Machine (use this tip once a month) you will need to give it a ‘vinegar’ wash. This is basically a hot wash with no load (empty machine), 2 Cups of White Vinegar and a third of a Cup of Bicarbonate Soda. Empty the bicarb into the soap drawer and pour the Vinegar into the drum. Run the machine on its hottest wash cycle and check that it doesn’t overfill with suds due to the cleaning action (if it does, drain and repeat).

For a Top Loading Machine: Drop 2 Cups of White Vinegar and 1/3 of a Cup of Bicarb into the drum and run on a full cycle hot wash.he machine and either soak

Remove the tray from the front of the machine and either soak it overnight and remove any debris or place it in the top of a dishwasher and give it a thorough clean.

Don’t forget the Fluff Filter: Your Machine has a removable filter on the lower front, unscrew it and thoroughly clean it. When finished screw it back into position (make sure it’s tight, but not too tight).
